How do I get hyped?
My brilliant friends, wow, I’m so happy that one of you had the guts to ask this brilliant question. Whether it’s the beginning, middle, or if you’re just finishing up the school year, we have to get hyped… we have to compel and create some hype and motivation inside of us to keep us moving forward and upward. Look, I know what your future holds. I know you will be stretched, challenged… I know that you will fail fantastically, miss the mark, and make every possible size of mistake. I know that there will be disappointment and moments of loneliness and sadness. I know that there will be times where you won’t feel like doing a whole lot, and that you’ll likely feel stuck, maybe even hopeless and helpless… “wow iuri, this is really working, you’re really getting me all hyped up right now!”
Look, I respect the heck out of you, and I’m not going to pretend that life isn’t challenging and full of twists and turns. I respect you enough to tell you the truth, but of course life will also be filled with incredible adventures, laughter, happiness, excitement, love, friendship, romance, victories, achievements, curiosity, moments of awe, gratitude and joy.
This is what you and I are in for. This life is the total package. It is rich in experience… the full spectrum of experience, and while you’re in the midst of this great and epic adventure… this quest, sometimes you’re going to need a shot of adrenaline. You’re going to need a dose of motivation and hype, and that’s what this short podcast is all about.
So let me give you some tips to get you hyped right now, and to keep you hyped more of the time.
Take care of your body and brain. Ok, first things first. I don’t know if you’ve realized this or not, but you have a body and a brain, and this lovely mechanism… this incredible engine requires some basic things to run efficiently and not die.
Your body and brain require fuel. Eat food and stay hydrated. Your body is always burning, and if you don’t refuel it, it’s going to run out of gas… this is totally logical and true. Do it.
Your body and brain require rest. Do what you can to rest at night by creating a good environment that allows you to do that. Here are some quick tips: Keep your room clean; keep your room cool; keep your room dark; read to sleep; turn off all notifications and bleeps, and sounds on your phone. Also, if you can’t sleep at night, learn how to power nap during the day. Successful people learn to do this… you can learn it to.
Your body and brain require exercise and movement. Whether you walk, run, go to the gym, go larping (and if you don’t know what that is, and you want a good laugh, go check it out), bike… and no, playing Wii sports or rocket league doesn’t count… but maybe guitar hero or dance revolution. Either way, move that body, and if possible, do it outside, because the sun and light, create energy inside of us.
Give your body and your brain a schedule. Listen up, your brain functions better with a schedule, with a target, and with goals and objectives. You don’t know this about your brain, but your brain is like a heat seeking missile, and if you can place some goals and objectives in front of it, your brain will move in that direction and look to complete those goals and objectives. So if it’s the end of the year, and you’re behind, and you need to get hyped, create a schedule that allows for time for school work. Schedule in that time, get your treats and music ready, turn off any and all notifications, and get to work.
One more quick one, that will create a quick boost of hype and energy. This may sound silly, but the research is sound. Stand up straighter. Breathe a little deeper. Roll those shoulders back. Smile. Offer to help a stranger. Compliment people. Speak to people, and feel that quick boost of energy and confidence flow.
Tap into Social Power. So by now you know that you and I are social creatures. That means that we are happier, live longer, suffer less, and perform better and at higher levels with people. Studies and research have proven it over and over again, and it’s just true. I mean, just imagine yourself at a football game or at a school dance, and you’re the only one cheering, or the only one in the mosh pit! Now I’m sure that you can still bring the hype all by yourself, but isn’t 100% true, that if you’re in that mosh pit, and you’re jumping up and down with 100 other people that the level of intensity is going to double, triple, or even be 10X’s greater? Or at a game, or watching a movie, or playing a video game… people and social situations accentuate your life experience. So if you’re looking to get hyped and start or finish out your school year like a total boss, tap into this social power and create or join some study groups, or go to study hour, or home room… whatever they call it at your school. You can do this with friends, or with siblings, or with parents, whatever it is, use that social power to boost your own and create some social accountability. I mean, doesn’t this feel and sound reasonable to you? It’s because it is! Don’t give yourself excuses, instead find a way to make this happen in your life, and never stop.
Bring the right mindset to the game of life. I hope you remember the wise words of Captain Jack Sparrow when he said “The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.” My friend, I desperately want you to be total success in this life, and to experience the highest levels of happiness and purpose, and for you to do that, you must possess some correct mindsets and a powerful psychology. I need you to know and realize this very second, that your brain and body can learn to do anything that you consistently, and patiently train it to do. Anything! Math, Piano, Biology, Language Arts, Football, Baseball, Dance, Act, Climb, Bike, Compose Music, Play Rocket League… anything! Don’t be a critic or a cynic in life. I know it’s easy to find faults in others, and to criticize your school, and your teachers, and your coaches, and everything else, but that cannot be you. Don’t be that guy or gal that is going around complaining and blaming others, seriously… don’t be that guy… don’t be that girl. Don’t be bitter, instead be better. Learn, Adapt, and Grow Forward. Fall up… know what I’m saying? This isn’t psychological fluff, this is real! The mindset and psychology that you bring to life is more than half the battle. Remember that you are here to learn, grow and evolve. It’s not perfection that you’re after. It’s not that “A” that you’re chasing, it’s understanding. I want you to make this your superpower! I want your personal psychology and philosophy of life to be your superpower. If you can make it so, you’ll find motivation and hidden reservoirs of hype inside of you. You’ll originate inside of you, and bring it to wherever you go! Fix your mindset, and you’ll immediately enhance your levels of energy and hype.
Find your Why. Nietzche, a brilliant German philosopher once said “Those who have a why to live, can bear with almost any how.” In other words, find your why, your reason for why you are doing what you are doing. Trust me, you’re not in school to waste your life. I know that at times you may think this way… I certainly did when I was your age, especially some topics that I just thought to myself “I’m never going to use that,” and maybe I was right, but there is a why to education, in fact there are several. Look, education is a ticket. Your effort; your energy; your resolve to tackle this challenge that is placed in front of you, and perform to the best of your effort, matters. It matters now, and it will matter in your future. Quit fighting and making your life miserable already, and instead use this time to exercise that brain of yours. Learn to study. Learn to take tests. Learn to ask for help. Learn to welcome a challenge with an open mind, instead of a closed one… for heaven’s sake, don’t quit and back down the moment something gets difficult or you don’t understand it… learn to work a problem and become a pro at this. I know you want to be intelligent. I know you want money. I know you want to succeed in life. I know you want to be happier and contribute something good. Education can help you get there! Believe it because it’s true. So connect to your “why”, to your purpose, and you’ll fnd some hype.
And lastly, make your room, night stand, phone, computer, wallet, bathroom mirrors, backpack, car, bike, wherever you find yourself often, make those places inspiring to you. Find posters, quotes, images, videos, plants, objects, or whatever that creates a quick boos of energy, truth, and motivation for you. I have a few windows at my work, and I’m surrounded by quotes that I adore and that keep me rooted in truth, motivation, and power. Do the same. Change your phone screen to something inspiring. Add some “notes” to your phone, and fill them with your favorite quotes. It’s time to build that hype playlist my friends, and get hyped!
So wherever you find yourself, or whenever you find yourself during the year, follow these simple steps, or use any of them, and immediately compel some motivation and hype to your life. Now get out there and get hyped!!
